what have we learned?
Now that I have had a several weeks to implement my lessons with a new layout and have struggled through the implementation of new procedures and teaching students to care of new items, I have learned so much. I have learned that as a high school teacher, it is possible that I don't communicate and create as detailed instructions for procedures and behaviors as I once thought I did. I think starting from the ground up and sticking to a thoroughly detailed plan will benefit my students by providing comfort through confidence in what they are supposed to and allowed to be doing, and more sanity for me because I am answering questions that I really don't have to be. Before, it seemed silly to spell things out in great detail for 16 year olds, but it will be helpful to both of us.
Next, I have learned the power of aesthetics. Going into this process I knew without a doubt that improving comfort was the top priority for me to do for my students. However, now that we have furniture that is beautiful and inviting, the impact that has had on my classes was unexpected. I knew I would appreciate the looks, since I am cooped up in the space all day every day. However, the idea that a classroom can be stimulating and calming and not look so institutionalized has improved the attitude and mood of my students when they walk through the door. They race in with excitement, kick back and relax, and seem to just revel in a state of calm. Pretty stuff matters, who knew?!?
Lastly, I have learned that there are so many more things I can be doing in my lessons! I have seen that when I structure in opportunities for conversations about learning the results are rich and rewarding. I need to plan really great questions and structure for conversation, which I plan on spending a great deal of time on this summer. Just exposing them to a group increases conversation, but without explicit guidance of what to discuss, conversation will eventually get off topic. I have been researching about math conversation and have got some great reading material for summer vacation! :)
I am so thankful for this opportunity and how this has changed my life is indescribable. I hope it continues to improve the mathematics experiences for all my students for many years to come! Check back for more updates as I go further and further along my journey!
